Travel Medicine Consultations

Are you conducting business all over the globe? If so, your employees could be exposed to illnesses that are not common or frequently seen in their home countries. There could be an increased potential for travel related injuries or illness while your employees are working in certain areas. If your employees become sick or are injured, the price to treat them, have them return home, or extend their stay could be exorbitant. Most travel related illnesses and diseases, however, are preventable and that is where a Travel Medicine Consultations comes in.

What is a Travel Medicine Consultation?

A Travel Medicine Consultation is used to assess individual risk for employees who are traveling for work. During the consultation a health professional will review the employees itinerary, health and vaccination history, and make recommendations for potential vaccination, or preventative medications as well as provide guidance on how your employees can keep themselves safe and healthy abroad. It is important to review this information with the health professional as recommendations differ drastically depending on location and planned activities. NMS Health works with your employees to schedule their appointments four to six weeks prior to their departure to ensure that they have adequate time to build immunity if vaccines are needed and obtain the appropriate medical documentation. Leaving sooner? No problem! We are happy to accommodate employees with tighter timelines.

What services might your employees receive?

Employees may need medications to treat possible illnesses such as malaria, travelers’ diarrhea or altitude sickness. Most commonly vaccinations are given during the consultation after discussing travel plans with the employee. Some vaccinations that are common during a Travel Medicine Consultation are:

  • Cholera
  • Hepatitis A
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Poliovirus
  • Rabies
  • Typhoid
  • Yellow Fever

Some areas of the world may also require your employees to have a record of recent titers or a negative Tuberculosis screening, such as a PPD skin test or QuantiFERON blood test result. This can be done at the clinic during the consultation, or scheduled separately at a laboratory testing site.
